Meet Carlos!

Being human can be complicated at times. Although pain is part of our human experience, our minds amplify it unnecessarily to the point our lives narrow and we lose track of what's important for us. Instead of letting thoughts and emotions dictate your choices, imagine you learn and craft the skills needed to use them to build the kind of life you truly want to live, with kindness and consistency, one step at a time. My work is about accompanying you in that journey, so that you (re)discover what it is you most care about and want to stand for in life. We'll explore helpful and unhelpful patterns in your life made up by emotions, thoughts, behaviors, urges, histories, the contexts in which they occur, and how they influence your relationships. Based on this experiential wisdom, we will develop a cohesive plan of action highlighting processes and skills that help you live the life you truly want and free yourself from suffering.

Carlos E. Rivera Villegas, Ph.D. is a Clinical Psychologist, Co-Founder and Director of The New England Center for OCD and Anxiety in New York. His role includes providing individual, parenting, and group therapy to youth, and adults; supervising students in training; coaching and consulting clinicians; and developing training programs for individuals and clinicians.

He specializes in the treatment of OCD, anxiety and related disorders using evidence-based treatments including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and other Mindfulness-based interventions. His clinical and research interests include the exploration and practice of processes that help people reach their full potential and liberate themselves from unhelpful patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving. He has found a well of knowledge in the ancestral traditions of the Americas and Asia, and integrates them into his clinical work in ways that align with our modern environment.

Dr. Rivera completed his Ph.D. at Suffolk University in Boston, and his clinical internship at Harvard Medical School/Cambridge Health Alliance. He has also worked and trained at places including The Child and Adolescent OCD Institute at McLean Hospital, The Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University, and Boston Children’s Hospital. He is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA), Association for Contextual Behavioral Science (ACBS), New York State Psychological Association (NYSPA) and the Massachusetts Psychological Association (MPA).
